[The Father] has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
Colossians 1:13-14 NRSV
I was one of those kids who needed a night light. Not being able to seeing anything was just way too scary. Maybe because I had a big imagination, or maybe because having the ability to look at my surroundings gave me a sense of control (as if being able to see the monster coming after me would have somehow made a difference).
Part of what helped me conquer my fear was prayer. I would often pray, “yea though I walk (or lay down) through the valley of the shadow of death (or my bedroom), I will fear no evil (and here comes the best part) for Thou art with me.”
Remembering that God was with me helped me overcome my fear of the darkness. And remembering that God is with us now can help us endure every challenge this world throws at us. For now, the darkness remains, but if we trust in Jesus we will never be far from the light.
Oh Lord, thank you for rescuing us from a path of destruction and decay by sending us your son, Jesus, the way, the truth and the life. Amen.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. We plan to post a weekly devotional and a monthly topical reflection AND we want to be as interactive as possible. Please share your thoughts and questions—we’d be thrilled to hear from you!
